How to Best Display and Protect Your Memorabilia

There are two types of memorabilia collectors, those that collect because they are fans of a particular sporting team, movie of television star or production, and those that collect memorabilia because it is a good investment. Memorabilia collectors will collect anything that either appeals to them or has some sort of value.

Which ever type of collector you are you will need to make sure that your memorabilia is protected for years to come. You could store your memorabilia in airtight containers to avoid the effects of deterioration from sunlight and humidity, or you could increase the value and enjoy your items of memorabilia by putting on display for all to see.

There are many methods you can use to display memorabilia. There are display cases, usually made from Perspex. These display cases are usually made for objects that are bulky or not suitable for a picture frame. If you item is very valuable it may not be suitable for picture framing because the process of picture framing requires that the item be fixed into position, this requires some sort of adhesion or fixing of the item into the frame, thereby causing damage, albeit unseen. If you have this type of item then display case may be the best way to protect and display your memorabilia.

As already mentioned above, picture framing is a viable alternative to displaying items of memorabilia. You may be surprised to find what a picture framer can display in a picture frame, apart from paintings, photos, and posters, that is. I have seen sports shirts, army uniforms, fire arms and other weapons, flags, jigsaw puzzles, sporting gloves and shoes / boots, bats and balls, helmets and caps, floral arrangements, fine china and other ornaments, and even a wedding cake. The point is that the list is almost endless. All these items were protected and hung on the wall to be put on show and enjoyed by the owner.

When selecting an item to be put into a picture frame there are a few decisions you will have to make. It is always best to discuss these with your picture framer first. The first thing you will want to do is determine where it will be placed. You will want to select a moulding (the frame profile design) to suit the environment, both profile and colour to suit both the item of memorabilia and the decor of the environment. Next decision will be the location to hang the framed memorabilia, is it in an area that will receive direct sunlight. Sunlight can quickly cause fading to some items, if so you may need to consider UV rated glass, this is expensive so it is usually best to try to mount in a spot that will not get much, if any, direct sunlight.

Lastly you will want to have some sort of an idea how the finished product will look. Ask to see photographs of similar items. Most framers take photos of finished jobs as a record of works performed, to demonstrate quality of workmanship, and to provide ideas to new customers. Spend a little time with your framer and talk through a few ideas. Remember that framers are experienced and will have some great ideas that you may not have considered, so listen carefully and you will probably end up with a piece of framed memorabilia that will not only be protected for many years to come but will look fantastic on the lounge room wall.
